Participant Spotlight

Dorottya Fabian, University of New South Wales

Research area: Music Perception and Production - Auditory Perception

My research focuses on the study of sound recordings with a view to better understand music performance (what performers do) and performance perception (what listeners hear and react to). I'm interested in how performance styles change, what influences these changes and how audiences react to them. So I study aesthetic response and performance parameters as evidenced in sound recordings using audio analysis software as well as experimental setups and work mainly within the boundaries of European concert music. My book on Bach performance practice as evidenced on sound recordings issued between 1945-1975 was published in 2003 by Ashgate.

Second HCSNet Workshop of the Next Generation Search Priority Area - NGS07

Last week's Second HCSNet Workshop of the Next Generation Search Priority Area held at Macquarie University brought together 40 participants to focus on how we can improve search engine technology by integrating more knowledge about the processing and understanding of language. The Keynote Presenter, Brett Poole, Head of Search at Yahoo!7, spoke about the social search revolution that's underway, and there were presentations from participants in business, industry, university and government agencies. We'd like to thank all attendees for their presentations and contribution to discussion sessions as well as staff in the CSIRO ICT Centre for their support of the event. Presentation slides from the workshop and event photos will be available in next week's newsletter.
