HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 3 Number 28Thursday, 19th July 2007
In this issueParticipant SpotlightDavid Copland, University of Queensland
Research area: Language Neuroscience - Speech PathologyI am interested in the brain mechanisms underpinning normal language, language impairments, and recovery of language after neurological injury. I conduct psycholinguistic studies in adults with neurogenic communication disorders, and investigate the influence of pharmacological agents on language processing, word learning, and language treatment after stroke. Some techniques used include functional MRI, event-related potentials, and divided visual field tasks.

This year's VisHCI workshop will be held as a Tutorial Day on Sunday, 2 December 2007. VisHCI2007 aims to bring together researchers, practitioners and students from a number of disciplines related to using vision and visual evidence in human-computer interaction (HCI). Visual communication - such as hand and body gestures, facial expressions, auditory-visual speech, sign language etc - is a major communication channel for humans. The availability of low-cost camera technology has led to an increased use of visual evidence in HCI. Relevant disciplines include computer science, engineering, IT, psychology and spoken language research. For more information, please visit http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2007/vishciworkshop. HCSNet Early Career Researcher Placement Award for 2007We are pleased to announce that the recipient of the Inaugural HCSNet Early Career Researcher Placement Award is Dr Freya Bailes from MARCS Auditory Laboratories, UWS. The Award is designed to provide opportunities for new researchers to build professional networks and high-level research collaborations at another HCSNet Research Laboratory, Centre, Group, Department or Industry Facility in Australia. Dr Bailes will visit PARADISEC, the Pacific and Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures, and collaborate with Associate Professor Linda Barwick at the University of Sydney. The visit will primarily involve the analysis of song recordings from the 'Endangered Music and Languages' project and it is hoped that these recordings can be used to test a number of predictions about what is retained in the communication of one 'same' orally transmitted song by separate performers (such as meaningful timbres, particular melodic contours, and larger structural forms).
