Participant Spotlight

Philip Rose, Australian National University

Research area: Linguistics - Phonetics

My research is in two main areas: The Phonetics and Phonology of Tone, and Forensic Speaker Recognition. Since 1982 I have researched how the linguistic category of tone in varieties of Chinese, Thai and Tibetan varies cross-linguistically at the acoustic-phonetic and physiological levels. Examples of this research are: The first demonstration that tonal F0 is produced in different ways (i.e. with different degrees of pulmonic involvement) in different tone languages. The development and refinement of the first normalisation techniques for the linguistic-phonetic comparison of tonal acoustics. The first demonstration of the existence of an exotic aryepiglottic phonation type in a Chinese dialect. The first investigation of tonal aerodynamics. The first description and analysis of Tibetan Spelling Chant (the chant Tibetan Lamas use to spell words in the Buddhist Canon). Currently I am working on a two-volume book with Dr Zhu Xiaonong which describes acoustically the tones and tone sandhi in the Chinese Wu Dialects in the whole province of Zhejiang. These dialects show the most complicated tonal behaviour in the world. Since 1994 I have been researching forensic speaker recognition, and doing FSR case-work. My book 'Forensic Speaker Identification' addressed the correct evaluation of forensic speech-science evidence within the proper Bayesian framework, and my book 'The Technical Comparison of Forensic Voice Samples' is the legal reference for FSR. I am currently researching the application of multivariate likelihood ratios in FSR; how to bring FSR in line with evidence evaluation in DNA profiling; and how to combine automatic and traditonal methods of FSR within the Bayesian framework (this last is a four year ARC-funded project).

HCSNet Summer School 2007

We are very pleased to bring you advance details of this year’s HCSNet Summer School. The Summer School will be held on Monday 3rd and Tuesday 4th December at the University of New South Wales and will form part of our annual SummerFest conference. We have an exciting line up of presenters this year, including Richard Parncutt (Evolution of Music), Philip Rose (Forensic Speech Science), Roger Dean (Musical Interfaces), Steve Cassidy (Introductory Corpus Linguistics), and our very own Robert Dale (Text Generation). More information on the courses we’ll be offering this year can be found at http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/summerfest07/summerschool. Registration for the Summer School will open on Monday 17th September and participation is open to all Australian and International graduate and senior undergraduate students, and established and early career researchers in universities and industry with an interest in Human Communication Science. See you there!

CSIRO/HCSNet Seminar by Dr Barbara Kelly

Dr Barbara Kelly from the Department of Linguistics at the University of Melbourne recently presented a CSIRO/HCSNet seminar entitled "Linguistics and the development of community in computer mediated conversation" in the CSIRO ICT Centre at Macquarie University. Dr Kelly discussed her analysis of online conversations over a six-month period from different message boards occurring within a large multi-national organisation, particularly focussing on the use of non-standard written linguistic features which suggest more casual, face-to-face-like interactions. Presentation slides and an audio recording of the seminar are available at: http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2007/kelly.

Thinking Head Project Positions available in MARCS Auditory Laboratories, UWS

MARCS Auditory Laboratories at the University of Western Sydney has two positions available in the Thinking Head Project: Senior Software Engineer (Lead Programmer) and Programmer. The Senior Software Engineer position offers a rare combination of hands-on software engineering and project management. Software engineering will involve development and maintenance of a Thinking Head software platform, and quality control and integration of components into the platform. Project Management will involve management of the process of system integration and of activities in the Computing Team. The Programmer position will be concerned with writing code for modules, and most importantly, integrating these plus off-the-shelf modules, and modules written by other members of the team into a seamless working Thinking Head system that incorporates e.g., real-time sound and vision processing in clean or noisy environments, speech and speaker recognition, facial feature tracking, architecture for fusion of various input, reasoning, dialog generation, speech synthesis, and facial animation generated via a large scale 3D face database of the Thinking Head. Closing date: 29 June 2007; for more information, please visit: http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/jobs/2007/marcs.
