Participant Spotlight

Marie Eve Ritz, University of Western Australia

Research area: Linguistics - Semantics

My research interests lie in the broad areas of formal semantics, the semantics/pragmatics interface, semantic change, semantic creativity and variation in meaning. I wrote my PhD thesis on vagueness in natural language and its consequences for a formal approach to the representation of meaning. I then started work on tense and aspect for a post-doctoral project, which subsequently led me to a series of projects funded through ARC small grants. The two most recent projects, in collaboration with Dulcie Engel, University of Wales Swansea, have investigated innovative uses of the present perfect in Australian English as well as a cross-linguistic comparison of the development of perfects in a sample of Germanic and Romance languages. Besides the new findings concerning perfect usage in English varieties, the projects are significant in that they document semantic creativity as it is naturally taking place, thus providing information that historical linguists typically do not have access to, given the nature of earlier language records. The studies therefore offer useful data and analyses that can shed light on historical development of grammatical categories and their meanings; on the (little known) processes of semantic change; on the semantics and pragmatics of the category 'perfect' itself, and of tense and aspect more generally. I have published articles on negation, French tenses and the English present perfect. My two most recent publications are:

  • Ritz, M-E. A. & Engel, D. M. (to appear, 2007) "Vivid narrative use and the present perfect in spoken Australian English." Linguistics.
  • Ritz, M-E. A. (to appear) "Perfect change: synchrony meets diachrony." Proceedings of the International Conference in Historical Linguistics (ICHL XVII), Madison (USA), August 2005. Benjamins.

HCSNet Perception and Action Symposium - Submissions Close this Friday!

Just a reminder that the HCSNet research symposium on perception and action will be held in Sydney on Tuesday 3 July 2007. Poster submissions are now being welcomed, however, please note the closing date of Friday 25 May (this Friday!). There will be three poster sessions held throughout the day and HCSNet will endeavour to provide financial support for postgraduate students travelling to Sydney for the Symposium upon acceptance of a poster submission. Please send your poster submission (maximum 300 words in plain text format) to Rick van der Zwan (rick.vanderzwan@scu.edu.au) by the above date. The Symposium will be held at the Hotel InterContinental and has been timed to directly precede the 2007 IMRF conference. Registration for this event is essential as the Symposium will be limited to not more than 50 participants. Please visit http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/hcsnetevents/2007/pasymposium for further details.

HCSNet Awards

We'd like to remind you that HCSNet is now inviting applications for the HCSNet Graduate Student Placement Award and the HCSNet Early Career Researcher Placement Award in 2007. The Awards provide financial support for a Higher Degree Research Student and Early Career Researcher to spend a block of time (two weeks or longer) at another participating Research Laboratory, Centre, Group, Department or Industry Facility in Australia. The proposed visit should be designed to enhance knowledge or a skills base, build professional networks, and provide an opportunity to collaborate with experts in the field. Financial support from HCSNet is up to $2,500 to each award winner plus $500 to each host institution to assist with local expenses. Applications will be assessed on merit by the HCSNet Executive and a nominated assessor relevant to the proposal. Closing date for applications: this Friday 25 May 2007; for further information, including eligibility, assessment criteria and application forms, please see Early Career Researcher (ECR) Placement Award and Graduate Student Placement Award.
