HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 3 Number 18Tuesday, 8th May 2007
In this issueLab SpotlightMusic Acoustics, UNSW
Our lab researches the acoustics of musical instruments and the voice. We also study music as a signal. In wind instruments, we study their resonators (the body of the instrument), their control oscillators (reed, lips, air jet), their interactions with the player's vocal tract. We are interested in the details of performance techniques, including embouchures and fingerings. In string instruments, we look at transfer functions, acoustical performance, and string-bow interactions. We are also interested in the fundamental acoustics of speech and singing, performance techniques of trained singers, particularly the use of vocal tract resonances. In previous work with cochlear implants, we examined the perception of music and of tonal languages and we occasionally work on feedback techniques in training. We are also interested in the information content of music, and some of the broader questions thus raised. More detail and many of our publications are on our web site at http://www.phys.unsw.edu.au/music.
