HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 3 Number 17Tuesday, 1st May 2007
In this issueParticipant SpotlightLesley Stirling, University of Melbourne
Research area: Linguistics - PsycholinguisticsI did my PhD in Cognitive Science and Linguistics at the University of Edinburgh with a typological and formal account of switch-reference in Discourse Representation Theory, and my research since has continued to combine interests in discourse and cognitive modelling, and in grammatical description and typology. Ongoing work on the Western Torres Strait islands language, Kala Lagaw Ya, considers topics in both grammar and discourse and I have a broader interest in referential choice, typological discourse analysis and conversational analysis in Australian languages. Along with Rodney Huddleston I wrote the chapter on 'Deixis and Anaphora' in The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language (2002), and I have a special interest in such discourse topics as anaphora and reference, discourse structure, narrative analysis and perspective marking. Earlier collaborative, psycholinguistic research on the relationship between prosody and syntactic structure in sentence processing and disambiguation (with Roger Wales) and on dialogue structure and prosody (with Roger Wales, Janet Fletcher and Ilana Mushin) has been published in journals such as Language & Cognitive Processes, Speech Communication, Language & Speech, and Discourse Processes, and in the Proceedings of Sigdial and Gotalog. Since 2004 I have shifted focus to a consideration of discourse and language disorders and in particular have been working on a collaborative research project (funded by an ARC grant from 2006) on autism and written narrative: 'StoryLincs'. The project website for this (including links to publications) is at http://www.autismnarrative.unimelb.edu.au. I am also involved in a current project on language and schizophrenia and cross-disciplinary work exploring linguistic indicators of perspective and identity in narratives of disease and disability.

Applications will be assessed on merit by the HCSNet Executive and a nominated assessor relevant to the proposal. Closing date for applications: 25 May 2007; for further information, including eligibility, assessment criteria and application forms, please see Early Career Researcher (ECR) Placement Award and Graduate Student Placement Award.
