Participant Spotlight

Tanja Gaustad van Zaanen, Appen Pty Ltd

Research area: Natural Language Processing

For my PhD I did research on Word Sense Disambiguation in Dutch. The system I developed combined machine learning with various kinds of linguistic information, such as lemmas, POS, and dependency relations. Evaluating the performance of my system on the Dutch Senseval-2 dataset, it achieved state of the art performance. In January 2005, I started working at Appen on different projects (transcription, translation, lexicons, grammars). The most recent project I have been involved in concerns authorship attribution and author profiling. We use machine learning to predict demographic and psychometric traits of authors. Our results so far are very encouraging. I also have a general interest in and have worked with text categorization, corpus linguistics, and evaluation methods.

The Where and When of SummerFest '07!

HCSNet-initiated Grant Applications

HCSNet participants have recently submitted an ARC Linkage International grant entitled Thinking and Talking Internationally: Portability and Performance Innovations for an ARC/NH&MRC Thinking System (Administering Institution: University of Western Sydney; Personnel: Burnham, Davis, Kuratate, Paine, Stelarc, Stevens, Kim, Powers, Fels, Vatikiotis-Bateson). Under the Carrick Institute Competitive Grants Program, HCSNet has also submitted an expression of interest for a project entitled SummerSchoolOnADisk: A Unified Interdisciplinary Environment for Summer Schools in Human Communication Science (Administering Institution: University of Western Sydney; Personnel: Stevens, Burnham, Dale, Goecke, Millar, Noble, Ballantine).
