Participant Spotlight

Goran Lazendic, University of New South Wales

Research area: Psychology - Psycholinguistics

Associative priming and item response theory. My dissertation investigates the locus and source of verbal association, and presents support for the assumption that representations of associative relationships are stored within an intermediate module that connects the semantic and lexical representations of words in the cognitive system. My research interest is to further investigate the mechanism of associative priming. Furthermore I am interested in the theory of measurement in particular I am investigating an issue of item dependency within a framework of the Rasch model and general item response theory (IRT).

Perception and Action Priority Area Prizes 2007

In 2007 the Perception and Action (P&A) Priority Area has set itself the aim of establishing functional research collaborations across researchers working in different disciplines and in different institutions. With a view to fostering both collaborative research and junior researchers, the P&A Priority Area will be supporting two awards this year: 1. Human Communication Science: Perception and Action Prize for Best Refereed Publication by a Postgraduate Student Researcher; and 2. Human Communication Science: Perception and Action Prize for Best Refereed Publication from a Cross-Institutional or Cross-Disciplined Group of Researchers. Each award will attract a prize of $500 to support research or conference travel, and award winners will receive some support to attend SummerFest '07. There will be a call for nominations for each of the awards in October, and that call will outline the assessment criteria for each award. Stay tuned for more information!

ARC Linkage International Awards

Last year the Australian Research Council flagged that as part of its ongoing review of funding schemes, it planned to replace the Linkage International Awards category with an increased focus on funding to areas such as international collaboration under the Discovery Projects scheme. Reasons for this included the costs associated with administering multiple rounds of Linkage International Awards (including the time and effort associated with post-award management of relatively small sums of money). We have received recent advice that the next round of Linkage International Awards, due on April 20, 2007, will be the final round of awards to be assessed outside a major program. Next year's Discovery Rules will probably include a special focus on the international aspect, with funding to include international airfares and some subsistence. Other funding sources for international collaborations include the DEST International Science Linkage Programs.

Research Fellow in User Modelling and Language Technology, University of Melbourne

The appointee will apply techniques from user modelling and language technology to help people navigate information rich, physical environments, focusing on the museum domain. Specifically, the appointee will work at the interface between user modelling and language technology, in developing and implementing collaborative and content-based user modeling techniques, and amalgamative language modelling/content delivery techniques. This position is sponsored by the Australian Research Council (ARC) as a collaborative effort between the User Modelling and Natural Language Group at Monash University, and the Language Technology, Agent Research and Interaction Design Groups at the University of Melbourne. The appointee will divide his/her time between Monash University and the University of Melbourne. More information is available at: http://jobs.unimelb.edu.au/jobDetails.asp?sJobIDs=282801.

Postdoctoral Research Position - CSU (18months)

Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position (candidate may not be required to relocate to Bathurst). The successful candidate will conduct research on language development in children. Specifically, the candidate will be appointed to work on an ARC grant (awarded to Dr Joanne Arciuli) entitled "To Stress or Not to Stress: A Cross-linguistic Investigation of Lexical Stress Using Corpus Analyses, Behavioural Testing and Computational Modelling." This project is being undertaken in conjunction with social scientists at the University of York,UK, under a new agreement between the ARC and the ESRC to encourage international collaboration. The candidate will be expected to establish links with schools, construct appropriate behavioural tests and undertake testing with children aged 4-12. The candidate will be expected to analyse results and contribute to the writing of journal articles and presentations at conferences.
