BAYESIAN NETWORKS AND MARKOV MODELS: USER MODELING AND NATURAL LANGUAGE PROCESSINGIngrid Zukerman, Monash UniversityIn the last decade, the increased and immediate availability of large linguistic repositories has had a profound effect on research and applications in NLP and User Modeling. The availability of these repositories encourages the use of probabilistic techniques to solve problems in these areas. Two of the most influential techniques of this type are Bayesian Networks and Markov Models. Markov Models represent temporal relations between events, and Bayesian Networks represent causal and evidential relations. The course will describe these techniques, present some of their applications in User Modeling and NLP, and discuss challenges and opportunities. Materials |
