ACOUSTICS OF MUSICAL INSTRUMENTSJoe Wolfe, University of New South WalesThis workshop will begin with a presentation comparing and contrasting the physical and practical functions common to different families of musical instruments. Then we investigate some of the principles of the resonators and excitation mechanisms of the string and wind families. This will provide a background to the next stage, which will be rather less formal. In this section, we look at particular topics. Some of these will be from our lab's research, but others will be suggested by those attending (preferably but not necessarily with advance notice to the speaker). Although this is listed as an advanced topic, the multidisciplinary nature means that only rather basic knowledge will be assumed. Consequently, the workshop will focus on the important concepts rather than technical details. Our lab's reasonably extensive website may be considered as a set of appendices for further consultation where necessary. The speaker - and possibly others - will bring a number of 'props' that will be used to illustrate the effects under discussion. Materials, both introductory and more advanced, are available at www.phys.unsw.edu.au/music Materials |
