ACQUIRED NEUROLOGICAL LANGUAGE DISORDERS

Helen Chenery, University of Queensland

This course will employ a case-based learning paradigm to show how interdisciplinary science has contributed to our understanding of aphasia (language loss as a result of acquired neurological damage) and other neurogenic language disorders (such as that seen in people with schizophrenia). Key theoretical foundations relating to psycholinguistic theory and cognitive neuroscience will be covered as they relate to each language disordered case. The course will also provide examples of how new technologies such as advances in neural imaging, electrophysiological and behavioural studies of real-time language processing, and computational models of language breakdown have progressed both our understanding and management of acquired disorders of language. Some future directions in interdisciplinary research integrating the expertise, ideas, populations and technologies that are available across the HCSNet community will be explored.
