To encourage interaction among the participants that may eventually lead to fruitful cooperations, and as a way to gather information about the perceived research priorities in the area of next-generation search, breakout sessions were scheduled as part of the workshop. The sessions were focused on a hypothetical scenario, and the participants were asked to do a specific task related to the scenario.
The Scenario
The ARC has decided to leverage Australia’s broad range of research capabilities that might contribute to the interdisciplinary development of next generation search engines, and has decided to do this via a Special Research Initiative.
We have the opportunity to influence what this SRI call for proposals will look like.
The Task
Prepare a four-minute presentation that you will pitch to the ARC, establishing:
the need for a research initiative in this area;
a convincing description of the key issues and problems that proposals to the program should address;
a description of the mechanisms you propose to encourage collaboration across sites and disciplines, and to demonstrate that progress is being made.
Give your SRI a catchy name so people remember it.
