HCSNet Update Newsletter Volume 3 Number 4Tuesday, 30th January 2007
In this issueParticipant SpotlightJoanne Arciuli, Charles Sturt University
Research area: Psychology - PsycholinguisticsMy research concerns human and machine language processing. I have published in a variety of areas including visual word recognition, speech perception, second language learning, semantic processing using PET, dichotic listening and text-to-speech systems. I am currently engaged in several projects including neuropsychological, developmental, neuroscientific and cross-linguistic investigations of the processing of lexical stress. From 2007 I will be funded by two external ARC grants and two internal CSU grants and will be sponsored in a 50% research-only position at CSU. Recent publications include: "Arciuli & Cupples (2006). The processing of lexical stress during visual word recognition: Typicality effects and orthographic correlates. QJEP, 59:5, 920-948" and "Arciuli, Cupples & Vigliocco, G. (2006). Are word meanings corresponding to grammatical catgeories organised differently within lexical semantic memory? Mental Lexicon, 1:2, 251-276". Current international collaborators include Prof K Hugdahl (Norway), Dr P Monaghan (UK), Prof Slowiaczek (Maine, USA) and Dr S Guion (Oregon, USA). I am also undertaking various projects with members of the Centre for Research in Complex Systems (CRiCS) and with Dr A Thompson from Psychology at CSU. I have several years experience in industry working on ASR and TTS systems and on user-centred dialog design for voice recognition applications in Australia (Holly Australia) and in London (Dimension Data, UK). I started at CSU in Jan 2006 after completing a post-doc at UCL. NewsIMRF 2007 - Call for Papers & SymposiaThe International Multisensory Research Forum's 8th annual meeting will be held at the University of Sydney from 4th - 8th July 2007. The IMRF scientific committee is now calling for abstracts to be submitted for oral and poster presentations, as well as for suggestions for 2 hour symposium sessions. All 5 senses are represented at IMRF in a multi-disciplinary forum, and scientific approaches represented include: electrophysiology, evoked potentials and psychophysiology, animal behavior, human psychophysics, neurophysiology, cognitive psychology, speech perception, brain imaging and computational modeling. The IMRF meeting also includes a Graduate Student Symposium, and a small number of graduate students will be selected by the scientific committee to present their work in a specially dedicated symposium showcasing talented work from graduate students. Selected students will have the conference expenses subsidized. All intending IMRF participants should submit a 200-word abstract. Further information, including key dates for the submission of symposium proposals and regular abstracts, is available at the conference web site: http://www.imrf.info/2007. Postdoctoral Research Position (18 months) - CSUCharles Sturt University, Bathurst, invites applications for a postdoctoral research position (candidate may not be required to relocate to Bathurst). The successful candidate will conduct research on language development in children. Specifically, the candidate will be appointed to work on an ARC grant (awarded to Dr Joanne Arciuli) entitled “To Stress or Not to Stress: A Cross-linguistic Investigation of Lexical Stress Using Corpus Analyses, Behavioural Testing and Computational Modelling.” This project is being undertaken in conjunction with social scientists at the University of York, UK, under a new agreement between the ARC and the ESRC to encourage international collaboration. The candidate will be expected to establish links with schools, construct appropriate behavioural tests and undertake testing with children aged 4-12. The candidate will be expected to analyse results and contribute to the writing of journal articles and presentations at conferences. For more details, please see: http://www.hcsnet.edu.au/jobs/postdoc-csu-jan2007. Postdoctoral Research Fellowship - UWSMARCS Auditory Laboratories at UWS invite applications from suitably qualified applicants for a 3 year fixed term postdoctoral research fellowship position on the theme of Children’s Futures. The primary responsibility of the successful applicant will be for the implementation of a research project that assesses the quality of interactions between pre-verbal hearing impaired infants and their caregivers. Applicants should have knowledge of the issues relating to hearing impairment in infants and young children, and an interest in research that springs from the newly implemented screening of newborns for hearing loss. In addition, the successful applicant will be expected to spend approximately half of their time conducting their own research in areas related to the impact of hearing impairment in infants and children. Applications close: 12 February 2007. For further details, please see http://apps.uws.edu.au/vacancies/?pro=position_details&pos_ID=3926.
