Description

The ARC Human Communication Sciences Network (HCSNet) is holding a workshop on advances in the neuroscience of speech and language. The spur for such a workshop is the advent of a range of neuroscientific techniques that provide unprecedented opportunities to advance our understanding of the neural organisation of speech and language and which may in turn provide critical insights into the functional architecture of this most complex of human faculties. Advances can be made in this field by investigating a variety of neurological populations and employing a range of neuroscientific techniques including: Functional MRI (fMRI), Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Magnetoencephalography (MEG), Event-related potentials (ERPs), Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), Deep brain stimulation (DBS) and Neuronal recording.

This workshop will present the state-of-the-art regarding neuroscientific techniques for investigating speech and language, what information these approaches can provide, and how these findings might be used. Current challenges and future directions will also be identified. The meeting will include keynote addresses by international leaders in the field including:

Professor Jean Francois Demonet (INSERM, Talouse, France)
Professor Greg Hickok (UC Irvine, USA)
Professor John Hodges (Prince of Wales Medical Research Institute, Sydney)

The meeting will also provide a forum for Australian researchers in the field to present current work on the neural basis of various aspects of speech and oral and written language. The meeting will provide an overview of the current national capacity for speech and language neuroscience research.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):

  • Neurophysiological correlates of reading, reading impairment, and reading treatment
  • Using neuroimaging to advance language processing models
  • Transcranial magnetic stimulation of speech and language
  • Functional neuroimaging of language in healthy and neurological populations
  • Neuroplasticity of speech and language
  • Structural imaging and brain connectivity studies of speech and language in developmental and adult populations
  • Deep brain stimulation of speech and language
  • Pharmacological modulation of language
  • Pre and post-neurosurgical language function
  • Neural organisation of bilingual processing

Submission Format

We welcome the submission of abstracts regarding any research that relates to the neural basis of communication, including speech and/or language. Please submit a title and an abstract (up to 250 words) to David Copland (d.copland@uq.edu.au)by the 12th of September, indicating (1) if you are a student, (2) if you are a member of HCSNet, and (3) if you wish to be considered for a travel bursary.

Registration

To register for this workshop please download the registration form and return to Mel Gallagher (m.gallagher@uws.edu.au) or fax (+61 2 9772 6040) by the 12th September 2008 (for catering and planning purposes).
